As an amazing summer of travel begins drawing to a close, it can feel like a sad time of year.

Popular destinations around Europe, the Caribbean, the U.S., and Asia have enjoyed record-breaking tourism numbers as travelers get back into the swing of seeing the world.

Does the party have to end just because the cooler temperatures and shorter days of fall are just around the corner? Absolutely not.

In fact, fall is one of the best times to grab an affordable and exciting adventure to a new, off-path destination you might never have considered. But where to?

If you’re lacking inspiration, then low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines may well have the answer for you.

Spirit has announced a series of limited-time cheap fares on flights to Colombia as it celebrates 15 years of flying to the South American nation.

Why Should You Consider Visiting Colombia?

Despite some recent concerns for travelers in Colombia, the country remains incredibly popular.

It was named as one of Lonely Planet’s Best In Travel destinations for 2023, and it’s easy to see why with captivating cultural hotspots such as Cartagena and Bogotá.

Cartagena’s old town is steeped in fascinating history, brightly colored buildings, lively entertainment, and street food like nowhere else.

Medellín is another impressive city to visit. Surrounded by some of the world’s best coffee plantations in the Aburrá Valley, you can catch amazing vistas of the city from the many mountains and hillsides surrounding it.

Away from its charming urban centers, Colombia has some wonderful natural scenery to take in.

Highlights include the El Peñón de Guatapé mountain in Antioquia, the Cueva del Esplendo caves, and the Paso de Angel in Boyacá.

Much of the country is covered in mountains and rainforests, so hiking remains a popular pastime for visiting travelers.

Another thing Colombia has in its favor is that it’s one of the cheapest locations in Latin America.

Hotels can come as cheap as $20 a night, while food and drink can be budgeted for as little as $5 a day.

Is Colombia Safe For Tourists?

Generally, the answer to that is yes. However, you need to be a smart and savvy traveler and take a few extra precautions than you might normally.

Colombia has a lot to offer – a vibrant culture, exciting cities, fantastic food – but there have been reports of violence involving tourists over the last year.

The U.S. Department of State has listed Colombia as a Level 3 travel advisory, recommending that if you do decide to visit, you should avoid protest areas and crowds, prepare a contingency plan for emergencies, and keep a low profile.

The Department of State has also detailed that the Arauca, Cauca, and Norte de Santander departments should not be visited at the current time due to widespread violent crime and the limited ability of the U.S. government to intervene.

The Colombia-Venezuela border is also classed as a Level 4: do not travel area.

The Travel Off Path team recently visited Colombia and has devised a list of things travelers need to know when visiting this Latin American nation.
