As 2023 wraps up, people are still excited to make travel plans all across the globe. For Americans, Mexico ranks high on the list.

In fact, the Mexican government just released data confirming it was the busiest year ever, with new tourism records being set.

When we think of a cultural trip abroad, Mexico is one of the first destinations to come to mind. The same goes for dreamy beach vacations.

Factor in both and it’s no surprise Mexico is booming with tourists. Over 17.6 million international travelers crossed Mexico’s border between January and October.

As the calendar will soon turn to a new year, Mexico will surely remain a favorite for U.S. vacationers.

Cancun

One of the most accessible entry points into Mexico from the U.S. is the immaculate beach city of Cancun.

Just about any major airport in the U.S. will offer flights here, and if not, it’s easy to connect. Travelers flock here for a blissful beach getaway to forget the stresses of life back home.

The grown-ups can act like kids again at an adults-only resort if they so choose, or the whole crew can come along for the ultimate family vacation.

With world-class resorts and all-inclusive packages, Cancun has become the #1 international destination for American travelers.

There is no place on Earth more Americans use their passport for than Cancun. There are phenomenal beaches in Cancun proper and even more dispersed outside the city limits.

Nearby Playa del Carmen, Isla Mujeres, and the island of Cozumel are top choices just outside of Cancun.

Of course, you can’t forget about Tulum, either. Travelers will soon no longer have to pass through Cancun to get here, as Tulum just opened its own international airport. The first flights from the U.S. are set to begin in March 2024.

Mexico City

The second most popular destination may not have a beach, but you will never be bored.

The largest city in North America is an endless playground for those seeking a weekend getaway, fun cultural experiences or a new home away from home as a digital nomad.

Many major U.S. cities offer direct flights here where you can start your trip right away by hopping in an Uber or easy-to-navigate metro system to many of the top sites.

You never know what you’ll stumble upon in Mexico City, and it’s very safe to explore, which is why it’s a popular solo destination.

From trendy neighborhoods to heavenly street food and centuries-old traditions, Mexico City is always the right choice for a trip.

Los Cabos

At the southernmost tip of the gorgeous state of Baja California Sur is a paradise overflowing with luxury. Americans looking to splurge on the ultimate vacation choose Los Cabos.

As the third most popular destination in Mexico, there is so much to do and see. However, there is nothing wrong with simply lounging at your ritzy resort and letting your stresses melt away.

More flights and cruises are making this region of Mexico one of the most well-connected luxury destinations.

Los Cabos also set tourism records this year and expects at least half a million more tourists in 2024.

Right now, those who visit can enjoy a sunny escape from the impending winter cold and enjoy the beginning of whale season through a variety of tours in Cabo and nearby La Paz.

Other Awesome Destinations In Mexico

Beyond Cancun, Mexico City and Los Cabos, another roughly 4 million international passengers jetted off to other awesome destinations in Mexico.

Many types of travelers make their way south to Mexico whether it’s for a beach vacation, cultural experiences or a mix of both as a digital nomad.

There are still many places to visit outside the top 3 destinations. Oaxaca is a trendy cultural hub with astounding food and rich culture.

Guadalajara is breaking tourism records and serves as a gateway to charming small towns, such as Tequila.

Others may enjoy less-crowded coastal cities, such as Mazatlan or another bustling resort town like Puerto Vallarta.

The Maya Train should be on travelers’ radars, too, as it will connect many different destinations as a whole new, exciting way to experience Mexico.
