As we are now a few weeks into 2024, it’s crystal clear solo travel isn’t going anywhere but up.
The biggest trend isn’t just for macho guys who feel invincible anywhere they go; the ladies value their solo adventures too.
While safety is always a concern when traveling abroad, the spotlight becomes a little brighter when females venture off alone.
Let’s face it – it’s a crazy world out there! With so many different cultures, values, and beliefs, sometimes women get the short end of the stick.
To their credit, that’s not stopping them from taking the courageous path of traveling solo to some truly amazing places.
Backed by statistical data, these are the top 7 solo female travel destinations according to a new report:
Canada
Upgraded Points listed Canada as the best for ‘first-timers’. Solo travel is a big step against social norms and naysayers, but this easy-to-access country is a seamless fit for an international trip alone.
While temps are frigid now, it’s worth the trip to see the Northern Lights. Spring is just around the corner, however, making cities such as Montreal, Toronto and the very safe and scenic city of Vancouver all the more enticing to explore.
Perhaps the most adventurous way to see Canada is the famous Rocky Mountaineer train, a stress-free journey where you can sit back, relax and take in all the sights.
Spain
Spain is an excellent gateway into Europe geographically and for your wallet. While not the cheapest destination in Europe, traveling alone as a female, you may find yourself in budget-friendly hostels along with cheap eats.
You gotta take advantage of the free tapas, right?
Beyond the food scene, Spain’s streets are typically easy to roam, even at night. Locals and tourists alike are out on the town where you can blend in without a care in the world.
Singapore
Although this ritzy island nation is known for stringent laws, according to reports, that makes Singapore the safest country in Asia.
Travelers are often left stunned by how clean and tidy the streets are, which reflects how everyone follows the rules.
Safety is a big aspect of solo female travel, but you won’t have to keep your head on a swivel exploring this cultural country.
Whether indulging yourself at the famous street food hawkers, wandering the Botanic Gardens or eye-popping Cloud Forest, you’ll feel right at home.
Iceland
Looking at the map, Iceland seems like a far-off land, but it’s super accessible to reach and oftentimes on a budget with Play Air.
That’s where the budget ends, however, as Iceland isn’t known for affordability. That doesn’t stop solo travelers from tackling Iceland head-on though.
Female solo trippers love the sense of adventure through jaw-dropping landscapes, stunning waterfalls, and, of course, a stop at the famous Blue Lagoon.
Safety is no issue here, as Iceland is one of the safest countries in the world. Iceland’s police don’t even feel the need to carry weapons.
Japan
Regardless of gender, nobody likes travelers to boring places. Lots can be said about Japan, but “boring” isn’t one of them.
Massive cities full of wonder packed with happy, polite people seem like a win-win in terms of comfort, safety, and endless sites to see. The only worry may be a tough language barrier from time to time.
For a truly cultural experience, female solo travelers should consider staying at ryokans over name-brand accommodations and find time to enjoy an onsen – Japan’s version of a “spa day”.
It goes without saying Tokyo alone is worthy of a trip in its own right, but Kyoto and Osaka follow closely behind.
New Zealand
One of the most beautiful places on the planet has it all. Female solo travelers seeking adventure, safety, and solitude have found their destination in New Zealand.
There is a dividing line between solitude and loneliness. Solo travelers are experts at navigating between the two and embracing some “alone time”.
Filled with vast beauty, New Zealand is perfect for recharging and getting away from life’s stresses. Popular solo activities are hiking or renting a camper van and winging it!
With multiple direct flights and easy connectivity, such as United, the long haul is much more palatable.
Costa Rica
Nearby Central America is an easy flight away for those in search of a safe tropical escape. The pura vida lifestyle upon arrival is perfectly suited for female solo travelers.
While some travelers enjoy being on their own, Costa Rica is such a popular destination you are bound to run into fellow travelers when staying at hostels or retreats.
Focusing on personal wellness is a common theme here, but exploring the wonders of Costa Rica’s nature, such as stunning beaches, gorgeous waterfalls, and lush jungles, has to be good for the soul, too.
Some of the top areas for solo travelers are Guanacaste, Monteverde, Puerto Viejo, and Arenal.
