Want to avoid stress the next time you fly? Don’t fly through these 5 airports, which were just named the most stressful in the United States!
Air travel is not always the most pleasant experience. Long lines at airport security, flight delays, cramped airplane seats, and lost luggage are just a few stress-inducing problems that travelers may experience when flying these days.
The airports you are transiting through can have a big effect on your overall travel experience.
While a study was released earlier this year regarding the least stressful airports in the United States, new data has just revealed the most stressful airports.
This ranking is based on multiple stress-inducing factors such as:
- Airports with a high number of passengers
- Large airports, which can often be difficult to navigate due to their area
- Crowded airports
- The frequency of flight delays
- The airport’s distance from the city downtown
All of these factors can contribute to a stressful air travel experience. These are the five worst airports in the U.S. according to the ranking.
5. O’Hare International Airport
One of the most stressful airports in the United States is Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. While Chicago has been exploding in popularity as a travel destination lately, the city’s largest airport can be a pain to transit through.
While it’s not the worst on this list, a combination of the factors mentioned above makes O’Hare a stressful airport for travelers.
4. John F. Kennedy International Airport
John F. Kennedy International Airport is one of the primary airports in New York City, and traveling through this airport can be a chaotic experience.
One of the worst things about JFK is that it has a high chance of flight delays — a whopping 25.43% chance, in fact.
This summer, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) warned of flight delays in New York due to continued staffing shortages, particularly a shortage of air traffic controllers. In the winter, it’s also very common for JFK to experience weather-related delays.
3. Dallas Fort Worth International Airport
Dallas Forth Worth International Airport is another one of the most stressful airports for travelers. This Texas airport has the highest number of passengers of any on this list, with over 73 million travelers passing through each year.
This can obviously lead to major crowds at DFW, which makes for a stressful experience. It’s also the second-largest airport in the United States, which can make it difficult to navigate.
2. Los Angeles International Airport
Coming in second place for stressful airports is Los Angeles International Airport in California. Unfortunately, LAX is anything but a laidback airport.
The airport can get extremely crowded, making for an unpleasant travel experience. It’s also an airport that’s extremely far away from the city center, and with the notoriously bad Los Angeles traffic, it can take well over an hour to reach the airport from many places in the city.
1. Denver International Airport
Finally, the “award” for the most stressful airport in the U.S. goes to Denver International Airport. Colorado is a beautiful destination in the United States, but transiting through Denver’s airport can be a major hassle for travelers.
One of the factors that makes Denver’s airport so stressful is its massive size. It’s the largest airport in the United States at over 52 square miles — this is twice the size of Manhattan! Getting around the airport can be time-consuming, especially if you’re running late or have a tight connection.
It’s also a very crowded airport, with more than 69 million total passengers traveling through Denver each year. This is another factor that contributes to the overall stressful experience in Denver’s airport.
