Mexico’s tourism industry is thriving, and rightfully so. It’s truly an amazing escape, whether it’s a sunny beach getaway you’re seeking or a more cultural experience in one of many historic cities to choose from.
One thing is for sure, and that is Americans love to head south to our neighbor. The irony is that there is still a narrative that Mexico is unsafe.
Sometimes reports of rare crimes can take over headlines and create a false sense of danger, particularly for Americans.
While there are certainly areas that are not as welcoming to tourists, Mexico’s luxury resorts should not fit into that category.

If you are new to visiting Mexico, it can be unsettling seeing armed guards patrolling the area. However, they are simply doing their job to keep you safe.
Statistically Safe
It has been reported that less than 1 percent of tourists in Cancun, for example, have been victims of serious crime.
“The dirty war against tourist destinations does not affect the government, they affect the citizens of the place we live,” said Governor of Quintana Roo, Mara Lezama
Rare instances of tourists being harmed do occur but are extremely few and far between. When it does happen, it is usually from being in the wrong place at the wrong time or maybe exploring areas beyond the tourist hotspots.
If you go with what you know, in all likelihood, you will remain safe in Mexico’s resort towns. The U.S. State Department did issue an updated advisory for Mexico this Spring, but resorts were not deemed unsafe.
From Mexico’s perspective, President Lopez Obrador stated, “The State Department has forbidden 30 of the 32 [Mexican] states, but the country is full of Americans.”
Adding, ““Quintana Roo is full. Cancun is full of Americans.”
No Need To Leave All-Inclusive Resorts
Whether it’s Cabo, Cancun, or many other scenic beach destinations, chances are there will be a variety of luxurious all-inclusive resorts for your stay.
American travelers flock here for the ultimate beach escape, especially this time of year. The resorts offer anything you could imagine to fill your day, so it’s not unheard of to never leave the hotel grounds.
Every resort will have its own security team, plus the additional forces being brought in to patrol tourist zones.
Travelers who want to indulge in all-you-can-eat buffets, drinks at swim-up bars, or simply lounge at a sparkling pool all day should feel like they’re in the safest place on Earth without a care in the world.
Use Verified Tour Guides
When staying at a resort, most will be affiliated with local tour packages. If guests want to venture out and see the sights, going on a verified tour is the safest way to do so.
Tours will offer different experiences based on where you are, ranging from street taco tours to whale-watching tours.
As long as you book arrangements directly through your resort, you are in good hands.
False Narrative
Those who don’t keep up with the latest travel news might be getting their sources wrong from mainstream media rather than those “in the know”.
What typically happens is a random crime will occur and blow up U.S. headlines, which may deter some tourists from visiting if they follow the “Mexico is dangerous” narrative.
Another common hot-button topic is immigration at U.S. borders. Reports can vary depending on the news source. As such, the two topics combined don’t paint a rosy picture of our southern neighbor.
Regardless of one’s beliefs on these topics, neither should deter anyone from enjoying a vacation in one of the best places in the world to do so, especially at world-class resorts.
Mexico’s economy thrives on tourism and turns over every stone to make it as safe as possible for tourists, especially its most commonly visited vacation destinations.
