“Hush trips” are a growing travel trend, joining similar work-and-travel concepts like “workcation” and “bleisure” that have become more popular in recent years.
Remote workers are embarking on hush trips more and more frequently: jetting off to a new destination for a couple of weeks to work remotely without telling their bosses. It’s a way to travel more or test the waters of being a digital nomad without making a big commitment.
According to a recent survey of American workers, more than 56% say they’re likely to partake in a hush trip this year.
If you’re thinking about taking a hush trip, here’s why Mexico is the best destination for American workers to choose:
1. Great Internet In Most Hotels
A good Internet connection is critical to pulling off a hush trip, and luckily Mexico is a reliable choice. Overall, Mexico has decent Internet speeds, but you will find the fastest Internet in hotels.
With fast Internet, you can rest assured that you’ll be able to join meetings and get your work done even from a new destination.
2. Same Timezones As The U.S.
Another reason that Mexico is perfect for a hush trip is its time zones. The U.S. and Mexico share the same four time zones.
The eastern state of Quintana Roo, home to popular destinations like Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum, shares the same time as the East Coast of the United States, while most of central Mexico, including Mexico City, is on Central Time.
There’s no more than a three-hour time difference from anywhere in Mexico to anywhere in the U.S., making it easy to keep working your regular hours while traveling.

3. Many Rooms Have Workspaces
Most hotel rooms in Mexico are spacious, unlike notoriously tiny hotel rooms in other parts of the world, like Europe. Many rooms also come equipped with workspaces, like a desk and office chair.
You’ll also find lots of hotels in Mexico with business centers, and newer hotels even have dedicated coworking spaces and offices for remote workers.
4. Short Flights From The U.S.
Mexico is extremely well-connected to the United States, with tons of easy, affordable, and short flights. For example, you can fly direct to Cancun from 38 cities in the U.S.
Most flights from the United States to Mexico are between two and four hours long, making it one of the most accessible international destinations for Americans.
5. Many American Phone Plans Work In Mexico
Gone are the days of having to pay an outrageous premium to use your cellphone in a foreign country. Most major cellphone companies in the U.S. offer free or affordable services in Mexico.
For example, you can use your phone in Mexico as you would at home if you have an eligible plan with T-Mobile or AT&T. Both offer free unlimited calling, texting, and data in Mexico. Verizon offers unlimited calling, texting, and data in Mexico for $5 a day.
This makes it even easier to stay connected while working on a hush trip to Mexico.
6. Affordable For Longer Stays
If you decide you want to stay in Mexico and work remotely for longer than just a week or two, it’s easy to do so. Mexico has been named one of the top destinations in the world for remote work.
Americans can stay in Mexico for up to six months without a visa, and it’s easy and affordable to find a monthly Airbnb or apartment rental with all the comforts of home.
Some hotels in popular destinations in Mexico are even offering discounts on longer stays to remote workers and digital nomads.

I've definitely done that in Mexico during the pandemic! Didn't know it was a whole movement with a name!

I would chose Costa Rica or Puerto Rico over Mexico.
