Spain is a country that is currently trending with American travelers, but there’s one destination in particular that is exploding in popularity right now.
The Balearic Islands, which are off the Mediterranean Coast of Spain, have some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe. They’re also full of charming small towns, culture, and nightlife.
According to the Majorca Daily Bulletin, tourist arrivals in the Balearic Islands are at an all-time high.
These four islands have been breaking tourism records in 2023, and it’s not hard to see why.
An Island For Everyone
The Balearics are made up of four islands: Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera.
Mallorca, also known as Majorca, is the largest island that has it all: beaches, history and culture, and nightlife. Palma, the capital of Mallorca, is a vibrant and bustling city with tons of things to do, while there are many smaller towns and villages to explore.
Menorca is smaller and more laidback, with breathtaking beaches. It’s a great destination for families because most of the beaches here have shallower waters.
Ibiza is famous for its over-the-top nightlife, making it the top destination in the Balearics for those who want to party all night long and enjoy great beaches during the day.
Finally, Formentera is the smallest Balearic Island, reachable by ferry from Ibiza. This is a great destination if you’re looking to enjoy nature and a laid-back vibe.
Easy To Get To
Another reason that the Balearic Islands are so popular is because they are easy to get to.
The only direct flight from the U.S. to the Balearic Islands is a seasonal flight on United from Newark to Palma de Mallorca.
However, it’s very easy to get to the Balearics from Barcelona or from any other major city in Europe, such as London. These cities have frequent flights to Mallorca, Menorca, and Ibiza. Flight times from Barcelona are less than one hour, while flights from London are under 2.5 hours.
Three of the four Balearic Islands have international airports. Formentera is the only island without an airport, but it’s reachable via a 30-minute ferry from Ibiza.
If you’re already in Europe, getting to the Balearic Islands is a breeze.
Stunning Beaches
One of the biggest draws to the Balearic Islands is the beaches.
The beaches of Mallorca rank among the most popular beaches in the world right now. The island boasts 262 beaches, so you’ll always be able to find a spot to soak up the sun and swim in the crystal-clear azure waters.
Ibiza is another island that is rated as one of the best in the world right now. Not only is it famous for its nightlife and electronic music scene, but the island is also home to gorgeous beaches.
Although Mallorca and Ibiza are the two most popular islands that draw big crowds during the summer, you can find more peace and quiet on Menorca and Formentera.
These slightly underrated islands are also home to beautiful beaches, but you may be able to enjoy them with fewer crowds.
Why Visit The Balearic Islands?
The Balearic Islands are one of the most beautiful destinations in all of Europe.
These four islands boast picturesque beaches that look like something straight out of a postcard, along with gorgeous scenery and quaint towns and villages.
Many travelers only visit the big cities of Spain, including Barcelona, Madrid, and Valencia, and while these destinations are certainly worthwhile, Spain has so much more to offer.
Planning a trip to one of the Balearics, even if you only have a couple of days as part of a larger trip to Spain or Europe, is a great way to get a taste of one of the country’s most impressive destinations.
