As we make our way into December, Caribbean destinations are gearing up for peak season, which, if recent records are anything to go by, will be anything but underwhelming.

One stunning capital located in the northeastern part of the region, for example, is currently experiencing a remarkable influx of international visitors, with over 11 million tourists having entered its boundaries in the first 11 months of 2023.

This marks an impressive 19.1% increase compared to the same period in 2022 and forecasts an even busier, livelier 2024.

So, what’s prompting so many travelers to flock to San Juan, Puerto Rico?

Paradisic Weather

San Juan boasts the type of weather most of us can only dream of – a perfect blend of sunshine, warm temperatures, and gentle breezes that make those nighttime strolls around the city that much more memorable.

December, in particular, is an excellent time to visit the Puerto Rican capital weather-wise.

Temperatures during the month tend to range between 73°F and 84°F (22.8°C and 28.9°C), while precipitation and humidity are pretty minimal, creating the perfect backdrop for that sunny getaway you’ve been dreaming of all year long.

Unique Sights

San Juan is what you’d call a sightseer’s dream, beaming with historical landmarks, artsy neighborhoods, natural wonders, and jaw-dropping phenomena.

Those looking to immerse themselves in the city’s storied past will fall in love with Old San Juan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its colorful colonial architecture, cobblestone streets, and centuries-old forts.

If you’re more of a nature enthusiast, you can’t go wrong with the El Yunque National Forest, otherwise known as the only tropical rainforest in the United States National Forest System.

Though the site is located roughly 40 minutes away from the buzzing capital, I guarantee the short drive will be worth it.

The lush greenery, cascading waterfalls, and stunningly diverse flora and fauna will provide a much-needed escape right into the heart of nature.

With all that said, if you want to experience something truly one of a kind, you won’t want to miss out on a sightseeing trip to Puerto Mosquito at night.

The breathtaking landmark is known for being the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world (of which there are only 5 in total!), and, as it happens, December through May is a time when the phenomenon is in its most impressive state thanks to clearer waters.

So Many Things To Do

One thing about San Juan is that you’ll never struggle to find something to do.

The Puerto Rican capital is a treasure trove of adventures that caters to virtually any type of traveler – whether that’s someone looking to snorkel on the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean, a sun lover waiting to bask on Playa Flamenco or Playa Buyé, or a history buff enchanted by the premise of the San Cristobal fort.

If you’re feeling particularly adventurous during your time in San Juan, you can always go hiking, ziplining, or, better yet, explore the gorgeous Camuy River Cave Park.

Now that we’re in December, travelers can take advantage of the many seasonal events planned throughout the month, including Gran Mercado Navideño, the El Yunque Festival, NaviTown, and the iconic Hatillo Masks Festival.

Lively Atmosphere

San Juan pulsates with a lively, infectious energy that can be felt all throughout the city.

Between the enticing rhythm of salsa, legendary nightlife, and warm local hospitality, the Puerto Rican hotspot injects travelers with a healthy dose of the energetic, soul-enriching atmosphere that the Caribbean is famous for.

There’s no better event to experience all that and more than the annual San Sebastian Street Festival, one of the largest and most iconic festivals in the entire region, which transforms the city into a kaleidoscope of colors, music, and traditional food.

This upcoming year, the festival is set to take place from January 18th to January 21st, so there’s still time to book those tickets if you haven’t already.

Culinary Marvels

Most foodies already have San Juan on their must-visit list – that’s because the city captures the essence of Caribbean cuisine, complete with its bold flavors and out-of-the-box combinations.

The fusion of Spanish, African, Taíno, and American influences has given rise to a one-of-a-kind gastronomic scene, probably best represented by dishes like mofongo, lechón, alcapurrias, empanadilla, and arroz con gandules.
