This U.S. City Was Named The Best In The World For Remote Work

A city in the United States has just been named the best destination in the world for remote work. The way we travel wasn’t the only thing that the pandemic altered, with the way many of us choose to work also undergoing a shift over the past few months. More and more, people are choosing to work remotely – either from home or from a different city or country entirely – and a recent study has concluded that Kansas City, Missouri, is the best place in the world to do so.

Whilst it may not be the first city that travelers think of when they decide to make the switch to working remotely, the study revealed that Kansas City has plenty to offer travelers and remote workers, making it worthy of the crown of the world’s best. Here’s a look at how the study was carried out, what makes Kansas City such an attractive proposal for remote workers and which other destinations were ranked amongst the world’s best.

Kansas City Top Workcation Destination – Information For Travelers

The study into which destination is the best for travelers heading out for a “workcation” – a working vacation – was carried out by IcelandAir, the flag carrying airline of Iceland. According to the airline, 58% of employees surveyed reported that they would like a fully remote role in the future, whilst 39% would prefer a hybrid working model – leading them to create an index of the top remote work travel destinations in the world.

IcelandAir analyzed over 150 cities around the world, chosen based on their size and significance, in their quest to find the best workation destination for travelers to visit. The Icelandic airline assessed each destination across 11 key metrics to determine which would come out on top, with their analysis generating the top 20 workcation destinations for travelers. The metrics that each destination was assessed in were as follows:

Quality of life
Internet speed
Air pollution
Climate index
Cost of living
Healthcare
Safety
Average working hours
Traffic commute time
Noise and light pollution
Happiness index

After taking all of the above into consideration, Kansas City was the destination that came out on top as the best place for a workcation in the world. The city, which is known for its delicious barbecue scene and its rich jazz heritage, scored particularly highly in the cost of living and quality of life metrics – two areas that are essential for any traveler who is considering which destination to visit for remote working purposes.

Taking second place in the index was Vienna, Austria. A routine winner of studies into the places with the best quality of life and most livable cities, Vienna impressed with its low levels of pollution, its favorable climate and its top quality healthcare facilities. Wellington, New Zealand was third, boasting an extremely impressive quality of life score, whilst Denmark’s capital city Copenhagen and Edinburgh in the United Kingdom came fourth and fifth respectively.

Kansas City wasn’t the only North American city to feature in the index’s top 20, with the continent well represented by six cities in total. Victoria, Canada came in 6th place, making it the highest ranking Canadian destination on the list. Cleveland, Ohio; San Diego, California; and Kelowna, Canada came 13th to 15th respectively, whilst Jacksonville, Florida just made the cut in 19th place.

IcelandAir’s study also provides travelers heading off on workcation trips with a range of different tips to help them to enjoy a productive workcation. IcelandAir advises travelers to stay clear of alcohol and caffeine on the airplane if they wish to avoid the perils of jetlag, whilst also recommending that travelers ensure they take time to connect with nature, take plenty of breaks and practice mindfulness in order to get the most out of their workcation.
