One of the biggest and fastest-growing trends in the tourism world right now is solo travel.
In particular, solo female travelers are growing in numbers and heading out more often to all corners of the United States and the world.
But where are they going? And if you are a solo female traveler, where should you go?
A new report from TrustedHousesitters may have some inspiration after it recently revealed the best American states for solo female travelers in 2023.
The study considered multiple factors when ranking the states, such as popularity among female tourists, Wi-Fi speed and availability, levels of violence and general women’s safety, and also friendliness of communities.
One of the key target groups the study considered when it was conducted was remote-working solo female travelers.
Here are the top 5, all of which just so happen to be great places to visit in the fall:
Vermont
Already regarded as one of the safest states in America, Vermont is a very popular destination with solo female travelers.
It has very low levels of violent crime and no shortage of things to do when traveling alone, such as a huge range of museums and historical sites of interest, including Shelburne Museum and the home of Abraham Lincoln’s son Robert.

Vermont also has a huge network of hiking trails and cycling paths, meaning you can experience some of its incredible fall foliage firsthand while grabbing some exercise at the same time.
Pennsylvania
Regarded as another safe state with friendly folks and excellent internet infrastructure, Pennsylvania came in at number two in this study.
Of course, it’s home to famous cities of great history and tradition such as Philadelphia and Gettysburg, but there’s also the foodie heaven of Pittsburgh, the home of one of America’s most famous chocolate brands in Hershey, and the sandy beach escape of Erie situated on the great lake of the same name.
Another great solo activity Pennsylvania has plenty of is wineries – more than 300 different ones, in fact.
It’s easy to enjoy an afternoon tasting what the finest grapes of the region can produce; just make sure you have a ride back to your hotel already arranged.
Delaware
The TrustedHousesitters study says Delaware is the second safest state in the country and that it also has the fourth fastest internet speeds – a perfect equation for solo female digital nomads.
You can enjoy some of the most underrated beaches in the country along Delaware’s intriguing coastline, taking in quaint seaside towns such as Bethany Beach and Rehoboth Beach (recently rated as one of the 10 best small coastal towns in America).
If you venture inland, then be sure to check out the wooded hills of some of Delaware’s State Parks, many of which look mesmerizing in their fall colors.
White Clay Creek and Auburn Valley are particularly picturesque.
Rhode Island
Despite being the smallest state in America, Rhode Island has nearly 400 miles of coastline that is scattered with wonderful and peaceful sandy beaches.
Being the smallest state is actually one of the things that helped it rank well in this study, as it makes it very walkable.
September is a great time to visit Rhode Island, with events such as the Pawtucket Arts Festival, Newport International Boat Show, and the International Food Trail all taking place.
If you need a cold beverage after all that walking and festival attending, be assured that there are about 50 different small brewerys in Rhode Island.
Maryland
Boasting excellent internet speeds and a solid safety record, Maryland rounds off the top five.
When you’re traveling solo, it’s often important to keep the costs down, and Maryland can help with this thanks to its wide range of free things to do.
Baltimore has a host of free art museums, and there are plenty of outdoor things to see that are free too, such as Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historic Park and Calvert Cliffs State Park.
A real hidden gem in Maryland is Assateague Island – a sandy dreamscape that is also home to wild horses.
