Traveling on your own has become more popular than ever as more and more adventurous spirits embrace the freedom of solo travel.
If you’re wondering where to go for a solo trip, these are some of the cheapest destinations around the world where you can travel solo on a budget.
And these aren’t just cheap destinations — we’ve also selected destinations that are particularly solo traveler-friendly, so you can feel safe, have fun, and meet other travelers.
These are the affordable solo travel destinations to add to your bucket list this year.
Vietnam
Vietnam is known for being one of the cheapest destinations in Southeast Asia, a region that has long been popular with budget backpackers.
This beautiful and safe country is home to a wide variety of stunning destinations, and you could easily spend months exploring Vietnam without seeing it all.
Based on data from the travel planning tool BudgetYourTrip, the average cost of a trip to Vietnam is around $62 per day.
It’s possible to spend even less than this by staying in hostels and eating street food rather than staying in private rooms or going out to eat a lot.
Argentina
Argentina is one of the cheapest destinations in South America right now. It’s also incredibly beautiful and very safe for solo travelers.
For an entire month in Buenos Aires in August 2023, I spent just under $3,000. And this is on the upper end of what you can expect. If you want to stick to a budget, you could easily spend less than $1,500.
This amount included living in a swanky one-bedroom apartment in the trendy Palermo neighborhood of Buenos Aires, eating out or ordering delivery for almost every meal, taking Ubers every day, going on a weekend trip to Uruguay, and domestic airfare for onward travel to Iguazu Falls.
Unlike some other countries, I also found it very easy to make local friends and connect with the culture in Argentina on a deeper level, which is a great experience for solo travelers.
Colombia
Another one of the cheapest countries in South America is Colombia.
Unlike Argentina, where airfare from North America can be the most expensive part of your trip, getting to Colombia is more affordable with many cheap nonstop flights from U.S. cities.
Colombia is a great country for solo travelers, and it offers something for everyone — beautiful nature, fun and vibrant cities, great beaches, and delicious food.
According to the travel resource BudgetYourTrip, you can expect to spend $46 per day in Colombia, making it a great value destination.
Indonesia
Another affordable Southeast Asia destination is Indonesia. By far the most popular place in Indonesia is the island of Bali, which is considered to be the digital nomad capital of the world.
Digital nomads, long-term travelers, and short-term tourists alike are all drawn to Bali because of its great beaches, lush interior, friendly and welcoming culture, and fun atmosphere.
It’s also an extremely affordable destination. Even with its recent explosion in popularity, data from BudgetYourTrip indicates you can still spend about $61 per day traveling in Indonesia.
Portugal
Finally, if you’re looking for an affordable solo travel destination in Europe, head to Portugal!
I was shocked by how cheap my three-week trip to Portugal in July 2023 was. Later in the year, I visited other affordable European countries including Hungary, Slovakia, and Poland, and I actually found that Portugal was cheaper than all of them!
In total, I spent about $2,200 (excluding flights from the United States) for three weeks in Porto, Lisbon, and the Algarve. Again, you could spend a lot less than this if you stick to a budget and stay in hostels instead of splurging a good bit like I did.
The affordability of Portugal, in combination with its high level of safety, beautiful cities, and stunning beaches, makes it one of the most popular destinations of 2024.
