Top 5 European Destinations With The Cheapest Airbnb Rates Right Now

If you’ve been traveling long enough, you know that accommodation usually takes up a lot, if not most of your travel budget.

That’s why, for those planning to take a wallet-friendly trip this fall, it’s important to figure out which destinations offer lodging options that fit within a strict spending plan.

Those looking forward to a European retreat will be happy to learn that AirDNA, a company that collects short-term vacation rental data from thousands of sources, has just released its newest ranking of the destinations with the cheapest Airbnb rates right now.

Moldova

Short-term rentals in Moldova, a gorgeous little Eastern European country, were just crowned as the cheapest in all of Europe.

Chisinau, the capital city of the Republic of Moldova

So, if you’re on a bit of a budget but still want to experience your dream fall getaway in the Old Continent, consider this underrated country as your destination of choice.

Airbnbs here boast an average daily rate of €47 (~ $50), though many cheaper options are also available for those who want to limit their expenses as much as possible.

For example, a quick Airbnb search shows that you can get a charming apartment all to yourself for just over $20.

It’s important to note that if you’re set on certain higher-end facilities or locations, the rates will reflect that.

With that said, you’ll still get away with paying less for the same level of comfort (in comparison with other similar European countries)

Moreover, Moldova is famous for its ancient history, untouched natural beauty, and world-class wine, so don’t worry about missing out on those quintessential European experiences while on a trip here.

North Macedonia

North Macedonia is one of the smallest Balkan countries; however, what it lacks in size, it more than makes up for in history, culture, and natural allure.

Saint John Church, Ohrid, North Macedonia

Average daily Airbnb fees here stand at just €48 (~ $51), making it possible for visitors to enjoy a full week’s stay without breaking $400.

Kosovo

Yet another small, landlocked country in Eastern Europe completes the top 3.

Though Kosovo doesn’t promise the same warm, beachy allure as its Mediterranean neighbors, its gorgeous mountainous terrain, lush forests, and rich cultural scene make for the perfect setting for a fall getaway.

Since the country has been a ground of heated military conflict in the past, there are some areas that, according to the U.S. Travel Advisory, are best left unexplored.

As long as you stick to larger cities like Pristina or Gjilan, though, you’re in for the trip of a lifetime. What’s more, all prices are pretty reasonable, even in more touristy areas.

Airbnbs are no exception, boasting an average daily rate of 49€ (~ $52).

Albania

Once one of Europe’s most off-the-beaten-path destinations, Albania has recently garnered a great deal of interest in the international tourism scene thanks to its rich culture, stunning riviera, and reasonable prices.

Ksamil beaches. Four islands. The bay. Ksamil. Albania.

Generally speaking, Airbnbs in the country are cheaper than hotels, averaging at 60€ (~ $64). So, if you’re ever in Albania, short-term rentals are the way to go.

With that said, it’s worth noting that the more touristy, overpriced areas in the country skew that average by quite a bit.

The reason why so many travelers seem to debate whether Albania is a budget-friendly destination or not is that pricing can widely vary between cities and regions.

Modern Port Of Durres, Albania, South Eastern Europe, Balkan Peninsula

If you were to stay near one of the most coveted beaches (e.g., Dhërmi, Jalë, Sarandë) during peak season, you’d notice that the prices are almost on par with what you’d find in certain regions of Greece or Italy.

However, with the summer season coming to an end, prices are bound to drop. Moreover, there are plenty of gorgeous, budget-friendly cities away from the Riviera you can visit this fall.

Some of my top suggestions (aside from the capital, Tirana, would be):

Ottoman Era City Of Berat, Albania

Serbia

The “top 5” is completed by yet another Balkan country.

Though landlocked, Serbia is one of the most stunning and historically rich destinations in the region, offering so much to see and do that you’ll want to spend at least 4-5 days in the country to take it all in.

The Modern Waterfront Of Belgrade, The Capital City Of Serbia On The Banks Of The Danube And Sava Rivers, Pictured In The Nighttime, Eastern Europe, Balkan Peninsula

Luckily, you won’t have to spend an arm and a leg for your Serbian vacation, seeing as Airbnbs here cost an average of 62€ (~ $66) per night.

Must-see attractions in the country include:

  • Belgrade Fortress
  • The Temple of Saint Sava
  • Nikola Tesla Museum
  • Golubac Fortress
  • Skull Tower
  • Niš Fortress
Kalemegdan, A Medieval Fortress In Belgrade, Capital Of Serbia, Eastern Europe

European Destinations With The Most Expensive Airbnb Rates

According to that same AirDNA report, these are the European countries with the most expensive Airbnb rates and their respective average daily fees:

  • Monaco  – 338€ (~ $360)
  • Iceland – 231€ (~ $246)
  • Switzerland – 208€ (~ $222)
  • United Kingdom – 205€ (~ $218)
  • Greece – 203€ (~ $216)
Monaco

Though one of the smallest countries in the world, Monaco offers a sense of splendor and luxury that comes at a hefty price tag. The Airbnbs here are priced at a whopping 46.34% higher than the next spot down.

Moldova certainly comes as a surprise depending on what factors are considered bfor removing a country from a recommended list. One could go even further and include Ukraine to the list. I am sure that accommodation can be rock bottom depending on the region.
