Mexico has had its fair share of alarming headlines lately, as some horror stories have come out of the popular vacation destination.

While the report of Americans being kidnapped and killed in the border town of Matamoros took the world by storm, this uncommon incident does not mean there are no safe areas to visit in Mexico.

Regardless of how travelers view safety reports, the United States issued travel advisories for many regions of Mexico shortly after the reported deadly kidnappings.

Some vacationers may now catch themselves having second thoughts about visiting. Even if it is the more popular tourist areas, such as Cancun, Tulum, and Cabo.

Mexico’s economy relies heavily on tourism, so they had little choice but to implement more security in Cancun and Tulum to provide a safe haven for tourists.

Following closely in their footsteps, another popular tourist getaway is beefing up their security presence, at least through Easter weekend.

Puerto Vallarta Deploys 150 Security Officers

Puerto Vallarta has begun its deployment of 150 personnel to guard popular areas where tourists typically gather.

Backed by the Puerto Vallarta Civil Protection and Fire Unit, the security officers will work in multiple shifts with various assignments.

The surveillance area will mainly focus on popular beaches, urban areas and nearby highways that would impact travelers.

As the weather gets warmer, the beaches are expected to become more crowded, which brings more opportunity to become a victim of crime.

Some of the busiest beaches for tourists are:

  • Holiday Inn
  • Los Muertos
  • Boca de Tomates
  • Playa Camarones
  • Playa Palmares

Beachgoers can expect heavy security presence at these beaches, as well as the presence of dozens of lifeguards to ensure the safety of swimmers.

Those in charge of implementing new safety measures highly encourage those who have been drinking alcohol to not enter the water and to follow lifeguard orders.

Even though the latest security forces have been brought in to combat potential violence, more common causes of death are related to alcohol consumption and swimming without lifeguard supervision.

Away from the beach, there are still many other areas to find tourists enjoying all that Puerto Vallarta has to offer.

Tourists should feel safe off the beaten path too, as security personnel will have six stations spread out across popular areas.

Why Bring In 150 Officers Now?

Mexico is facing a public relations fiasco dealing with unsightly portrayals of the country.

So bringing in extra forces can alleviate some concerns for travelers as well as possibly downgrading existing travel advisories.

After all, Cancun has remained the most sought-after destination for tourists even after travel advisories were issued.

Mexico’s President has criticized the media’s depiction of his country going as far to claim that Mexico is safer for Americans than America itself.

It’s no wonder Puerto Vallarta is following their blueprint in hopes to keep tourism numbers up.

That shouldn’t be hard to achieve as this time of year is extremely busy for tourists, not only for the warm beach weather, but to take part in deep-rooted traditions.

Holy Week, otherwise known as Semana Santa, is a significant cultural holiday celebrated throughout Mexico.

Puerto Vallarta takes pride in recognizing the traditions of Holy Week and takes their festivities to whole new level. Tourists flock to its beautiful beaches and other attractions to celebrate.

One of the main highlights of celebrating Semana Santa in Puerto Vallarta are the beach vibes, where those looking for a good time can easily find bars and restaurants to indulge themselves.

Those looking to get in touch with their spiritual side can easily find a church to attend in the city. They are likely to hold Holy Week themed services and events.

One of the more common churches to visit is Cristo de la Paz, where participants carry a wooden cross through packed city streets on Good Friday.
